From B to A in energy grade — without any investments

Bulk Industrial Real Estate has recently installed a free solar photovoltaic system, provided by Sunday Power. That alone has resulted in the energy grade for the building being upgraded from B to A.

With its own solar system on the roof, there is less need to import electricity from the grid, which in turn positively affects the energy character of the building. How much the grade improves depends on the size of the plant compared to the energy consumption. Sunday Power sees many examples of solar plants alone giving customers better energy ratings.

“More and more banks are offering “green financing”, with better loan terms for green buildings that meet certain requirements. All commercial buildings must have an energy label from Enova in order to be sold or leased, and banks' requirements are often grade B or higher, explains Alexander Rydfjord, Product Manager and co-founder of Sunday Power.

Better energy character

The energy label will raise awareness about the use of energy, and solutions that can make buildings energy efficient. It consists of energy grade and heating character, where the energy character gives an overall assessment of energy demand, from A (best) to G (weakest).

“Energy demand is estimated based on the number of kilowatt-hours per square meter of heated usable area the building is designed to need in normal use. The energy rating is based on calculated delivered energy, regardless of actual measured energy use,” Rydfjord continues.

— The heating character provides information on the energy requirements for heating rooms and tap water, with a scale from red to green. Energy needs can be met by energy sources other than electricity and oil. How much better the energy character will be with the use of photovoltaic systems is something we help calculate, but from experience we see that in many cases the energy character moves up one step. When solar cells are installed on the roof, the need for external energy is significantly reduced.

Free solar system

The special thing about Sunday Power is that customers get the solar panels delivered and installed free of charge. It is possible through the fact that the customer commits to purchase “solar power” through the company, also at a reasonable price. One of the companies that has taken advantage of this is the hose specialist Hydroscand in Bulk Park Lindeberg in the municipality of Lillestrøm. The owner of the building, Bulk Industrial Real Estate, together with Sunday Power, is in full swing to install solar photovoltaic systems on several of its buildings. The Hydroscand building is the fifth in the park with rooftop solar arrays.

“The solar photovoltaic system on the roof of Jeksleveien 100 meant that we immediately went from B to A, without any other measures. This means we upgraded the energy grade without paying for it,” says Sandra Caffarena of Bulk Industrial Real Estate.

Building owners get a greener building, and tenant Hydroscand gets to produce their own renewable energy for their head office, without encroaching on nature or burdening the electricity grid. Alexander Rydfjord makes a point that there are huge roof surfaces in the country that are well suited to produce solar power, while the need for renewable energy increases. The Sunday Power will do something about that.

- All energy efficiency measures have a cost, and there are few that have as big an impact on the energy character as a photovoltaic system. Sunday Power gives the building owner this opportunity, without having to take the investment in the plant, says Alexander, who has a clear call for tenants or owners of commercial buildings:

“If you would like to look into the possibility of improving your energy rating by installing solar cells on your roof, do not hesitate to contact us at Sunday Power.
