Selmer Gruppen and Sunday Power are partnering to build the largest solar photovoltaic plant in the Norwegian automotive industry — at the new Bilfabrik plant in Lier.
Probably the largest photovoltaic system in the automotive industry
Selmer Eiendom and RøhnesElmer are, together with Sunday Power, proud to announce a comprehensive collaboration in the field of solar energy. The collaboration involves Sunday Power building what is likely to be the largest photovoltaic plant in the Norwegian automotive industry.
Everyone has to contribute where they can — even in our industry. For us, the Car Factory in Lier is an important step on the road. The facility itself will provide a shorter and more socially beneficial path from ordering to delivery for our customers. At the same time, we are striving to make that path as green as possible,” says Kjetil Hagestande, CEO of RøhneSelmer.
The photovoltaic plant, which is due to be completed in spring 2024, will consist of 1,779 solar panels, providing a total capacity of just under 1 megawatt. This would give an estimated output of 750,000 kilowatt hours, equivalent to the energy demand of 3.7 million kilometres of driving with a Ford Mustang MacHe - or over 90 times around the equator. In addition, the solar photovoltaic system will save the environment 331 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
“This partnership shows the possibilities and potential of solar energy. By filling its unused rooftop space with solar panels, the Selmer Group can efficiently produce renewable energy without encroaching on nature. With our solution, we help them achieve the sustainability goals for their buildings, reduce electricity costs and provide them with income from their own roofs. A win-win for all parties,” says Rikard af Ekenstam, Chief Commercial Officer of Sunday Power.
Norway's largest Ford dealer, RøhneSelmer, will use the solar energy for two purposes: to operate the building, which houses their main dealership and workshop in Drammen, and to supply its state-of-the-art electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
“We are looking forward to big and exciting launches from Ford in the near future. It is only natural that our new large-scale plant follows up the investment we are making on electric vehicles, with a state-of-the-art solar system that will supply both the building and the cars we will deliver, with electricity,” says Kjetil Hagestande, CEO of RøhneSelmer.
“Working with Sunday Power is for us a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future. We look forward to supporting Røhneselmer in the transition to clean energy, and to the positive impact this project will have on society and the environment. We chose Sunday Power because of their highly competent and skilled team and their comprehensive solution for solar energy, which allows our tenants at Bilfabrik to get cost-effective solar energy in a simple and profitable way,” says Fredrik Selmer, CEO of Selmer Eiendom.
“We are very pleased to enter into a long-term partnership with Selmer Eiendom and RøhnesElmer, and look forward to embarking on this ambitious solar energy project. This cooperation is also distinguished because it is probably the largest solar photovoltaic plant both in the Drammen region and in the automotive industry. Together we are setting a new standard for sustainability for the automotive industry, and we are proud of the trust we have gained in this project,” says Jonas Ibsen Brynildsrud, CEO of Sunday Power.
The installation process will start soon, and the solar photovoltaic system is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024.
